I had no idea that Chess legend Bobby Fischer had fled to Japan a few years ago in order to avoid trouble in the U.S. that arose from the rematch he played against Soviet champion Boris Spassky in 1992. Why was he in trouble for that? Because Yugoslavia was subject to OFAC sanctions that made it unlawful for U.S. citizens to do business there.

This is coming up in the news now because he's fighting deportation from Japan.

I just thought it was an interesting example of the reach of OFAC.

My personal favorite was the $27,500 fine assessed against Playboy Enterprises for doing a photo shoot in Cuba.

P.S. We actually want Bobby Fischer back? Go figure.

I think I'd have to go with the fine the New York Yankees had to pay for signing Cuban players.

Strange - usually the teams start negotiating with Cuban defectors (sp?) after they defect...I wonder what the particulars were.
