If a client opened and closed an account in the same year, is that worthy of filing a SAR?

Closing an account within a year of opening it is not, in and of itself, suspicious. Are there any odd circumstances surrounding the closing of the account, or a change in transaction patterns shortly before the account was closed?

Opened and then most of balance withdrawn, then sat on for six months and closed.

If the transactions were moderate amounts, mostly check/ATM's etc. why would a SAR even be considered? Over the years, I've had two accounts which I opened, then found the bank/service/fees not to be what I expected and closed the account within a short period of time, especially for a bank more convenient.

You would file an SAR only if you suspected the account owner was doing something illegal, including evading reporting requirements of the Bank Secrecy Act. A legitimate mistake does not warrant an SAR.
