Never had to deal with the IRS (phew!). But a few years ago I did win a rather large stake of the Canadian lottery. All I had to do was deposit their check and wire them the money to pay processing, but darn it I lost that check!

Can someone explain to me why $1,000,000 is sometimes abbreviated as $1M and sometimes as $1MM?

Back in the day (early 80's), M=000 so $1,000,000 would be $1MM. Now I believe some abbreviate a million as M. Confuses the heck out of me sometimes.

They change is so when you have a perfect regulatory exam the examiner has something negative to write about.

Goes back way further than the 80's. M is a Roman numeral = 1,000.

In day to day life, no one uses roman numerals.....so IMO to go around saying "1M" when you mean 1000 is sorta ridiculous.

1,000 and 1,000,000 aren't hard to write, and 1k is pretty much always understood to be 1,000 and 1m makes the average person think "million?" or "meters?".....

1k is pretty much always understood to be 0.62 miles.

The day to day life part isn't quite true. Roman numerals are still very much in use: Clocks/watches, name designations (Charles IV), chapters of books are often in Roman numerals, many list types, Super Bowl (<--had to throw that one in!), many movies/book sequels, book prefaces and appendices are often numbered with this type.

Saying 1M for 1,000 is ridiculous....I agree, not much I can do to argue that! laugh Not to mention it's technically wrong in that context, since it combines Arabic and Roman numerals.

I should have clarified....yes, roman numerals are used in book titles, on clocks, etc.......but in day-to-day life, no one says or writes "i drove 1 M miles to that concert" or "i saw a guy eat 1 M oysters at the oyster bar".

A weasel walks into a bar. The bartender goes, "Hi! We never had a weasel in here. What will you have?"

"Pop," goes the weasel.

Might be funnier if you're from the midwest or great plains states.
