I have a customer who closed two savings accounts in October prior to his passing in November. He was issued cashier's checks for both accounts made out to his grandchildren(one for each). He never mailed the checks and now his surviving spouse has them and is not mailing them. His son came in today wanting to know what the options are, he was with him when he closed the accounts. I am having the person who spoke to him find out if is his executor, however, what are the options? If the accounts had not been closed, the wife had survivorship.
My thought is we need to treat them as uncashed monetary instruments and follow that process. Can we reissue checks based on deceased persons wishes? What are the thoughts of the group?
