When there are bad actors that have scammed a member, John Smith and we have no additional information, do you say its a male? or check Unknown? I was looking for something that said to 'go by the name and your best guess' but couldn't find anything. What are you doing? Is there some guidance on this? Thank you!

If we don't know, we don't select a gender.

The only reasonable choice is to select "unknown" unless you know the gender. There is no rule than Michael is mail and Michel is female. But I'd drawn the line if the name is Bubba.

And there's what do they identify as? It's best to select unknown.

The last thing you want anyone in your bank to do is ask anyone about gender identity unless there is a regulatory requirement to do so.
