I hired a contractor to do some work on my house.

I made the check payable to "John" and signed the check.

"John" took the check, added his last name, and wrote "One thousand dollars" and printed $1000.00 in the amount box.

I don't need a lecture on how foolish and trusting I am. John never did the work.

Am I able to dispute the check, based solely on that I did not physically make out the check?

His handwriting and mine are clearly not the same.

I appreciate any helpful responses.

If you signed a blank check and handed it to the contractor, any dispute is between them and you. The bank is not going to be of any assistance as the check was properly payable when presented and it was not altered.

I agree with Randy. What you describe is a breach of contract claim and not a check fraud or forgery claim. It's not something for the bank to be involved in.
