Hi,

Do you block debit cards for inactivity? At what point do you block (6 months, 12 months)? Do you disclose this and where?

Thanks

Why would you block a debit card if the account it's tied to is still active? I probably haven't used my debit card in a couple of years, because I pay for everything with credit cards, then pay off the cards through an ACH from my deposit account. I'd be very upset if my bank restricted my card if I ever needed to run to an ATM.

Fraud prevention. If you have a customer who has not used there debit card for a year, then you notice charges start would you not be concerned.

I have a debit card, and like TMatt, haven't used it in several years - cash checks at the bank and would only use it if I'm going OOT at an ATM. If it was blocked, it would be a sure sign that the bank does not want my business anymore.

I have one client bank that *sort of* does this. They won't block the active card, but if it hasn't been used in 18 months, they won't issue a replacement when the card expires unless the customer calls in to request it.

Yes. Changes in account usage or expected account activity would definitely be a red flag that would require further investigation. I just don't see the benefit of trying to be proactive "just in case" the account holders activity may change. Depending on the sophistication of your account monitoring software, changes in account activity should generate an alert to be followed up on.
