Our bank is considering a change to our POS/ATM withdrawal limits on our debit cards. Our limits are (in my opinion) way too high. We allow our customers $1200 for ATM and $2500- for POS. What are your limits? Are we outrageously high?

Those amounts are more in the Christmas shopping exception limits we would grant upon request. To limit the banks liability, in our markets and for our customers, $500 daily was sufficient.

Ditto, your limits sound very high. We do $500 POS and $300 ATM. Case in point, one of our customers cards was counterfeited overseas and the person who did so took out the max. each day until the theft was discovered and now we're out $7,800.00.

Those limits are doubled, compared to our limits - which we just increased last month. On the other hand, we are also facing a loss relating to debit card activity on one account. Most customers just don't need or require that high of a limit and the downside risk is way to high.

Our limits are Atm $200 and POS $500. POS limits are sometimes low when purchasing large ticket items, plane tickets,tv's.etc. Then we make one day exceptions.

We allow $500 ATM and $1000 POS. If the customer needs to purchase something higher,we will up the limit for the purchase, watch the account, then lower it back down. Sounds like a lot of trouble but its been a good customer service tool for our customers.

Thank you all for your input! Hopefully, lower limits will protect both our bank and our customers.

Those are low limits. I do not know how your customers are able to get by with limits such as $200 for ATM withdrawls. Wachovia's limits are $2000 per day for ATM withdrawls and $15,000 POS. What do you do for a customer who is a high spender? I own a business and when I order goods for resell I never spend below a $1000 per transaction. On the personal side, it is not strange for me to spend $500 in one store on a day of shopping. Do you have exceptions in place to raise limits for customers who spend more money on their debit cards?

From a non-banker ...

My credit union issues debit cards with daily limits of $200 ATM and $300 POS. However, the member can raise that level to almost any level desired (within reason) simply by submitting a signed letter to the credit union manager. I recently opened a checking account at the credit union and had my limits raised to $500 ATM and $1,000 POS.

I am the anon with the $200 and $1,000 limits. Yes, we allow some exceptions, but I am in an urban market (2.5 million people)in the midwest and the $200 limit on ATMs is still very common regardless of the size of the bank. The OS limits are in the $500 or $1,000 range, but everybody allows some exceptions depending on customer.

$500 POS and $300 ATM for our bank, as well - we do allow case by case review of requests for increases and they must be approved by the lender/president at each banking center.
