Our security officer is out today so I was presented with this issue: Teller cashed a check for a non-customer (big no-no in itself), supposedly from a security company in our area drawn off a bank in Illinois (we are in Wisconsin). Check came bank stating "Invalid Account Number." Security company listed on the check has a local address, but did not find anything in the local phone book that's even close to the name of this company (street address is even spelled wrong). Payee on the check has an Illinois address . . . found a person with the same name in the local phone book. We have the DL# of the person cashing the check, but that's it. Where do I go from here? Contact local PD and let them handle it? Is our only way of recovering our money is if they find the person who did this?

PD is the next step. Yes, your only recourse is from the non-customer who cashed the check.

Don't be surprised if the Drivers License number is a fake. We saw a rash of these checks cashed at supermarkets & convenience stores. The person traveled from town to town picking up names of local businesses and individuals. They would print up several checks in the hotel room at night with local businesses as the drawer and local individuals as the payees. They would use the name and routing number of a bank several counties away on the fake checks. They also had the capacity to make fake ID's but rarely had to use them. It is unusual that they cashed the check at a bank, the people we saw liked to stay away from banks because we (usually) ask too many questions. Good Luck......
