Seriously the best way is to just start taking to him and not try to ask him out. Things will work themselves out one way or another.

Search, sorry to chime in so late, i left early yesterday and missed this entire segment of the bol dating soap opera...  You should do it, just ask him out. you don't have to know alot about him right now, that's what dates are for. for years i refused to ask out someone no matter how big the crush was, i was thinking the same as you....if they were interested, they would ask. well i got over that real quick after i finally realized that all the losers i was getting asked by was just that- LOSERS. so i decided to be more 'confident' and do the asking. not once did i ever feel 'desperate'. yes, i few times i got turned down, but in time i ask out the right guy, he said yes, and well so far in my little life...it was one of the best things i ever did. i didn't know him at all, but now we know everything about eachother. so go for it girl....just ask him out.
