I am with a corporation who is starting to use ACH to make interest deposits directly into our clients' accounts. I am trying to explain ACH to our clients. They all understand the concept of a wire, and most understand direct deposit of payroll. The question that keeps being raised is a fee. I have never heard of a bank charging a fee for ACH, but can they? I have told them "most" banks do not charge a fee to accept ACH deposits, but can I tell them "banks do not charge a fee."?

THANKS!

I've never heard of a bank charging to receive a credit, but many do so for receiving debit ACH transactions.

If your clients have any question about whether their banks charge for receiving ACH direct deposits of this type, they should contact the banks in question. Although it's rare that a fee would be imposed for an ACH credit, it's not prohibited. It would be a mistake to make a sweeping statement that banks don't charge.
