Pedaling along a scenic highwa...
We don't print our customers' SSN's on our bank statements, but I'm told that some banks do and have been asked about the legal side of it. I am wondering how many banks still do this and if there are any regulations to this effect.

Personally, I see no benefit and a good amount of risk in including the SSN. I am giving a class to a ladies' group from church about ID Theft and I anticipate questions like the one above, so I am trying to prepare myself.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Jeremy

We quit doing that a couple of years ago. I don't know that there is any regulations about it but we had been receiving complaints from customers concerned about identity theft.

California outlawed the practice in the Golden state a few years back. I don't agree with a lot of things that California does, but this isn't one I have any argument with.

We don't do it, and I don't see it on my Wells statement. Key didn't do it either.

Frankly I'd be upset to see it. Talk about making a crooks life easy!

We stopped printing tax ID #'s on our customers' statements a few years ago. None of the other banks where I have accounts print the #'s on their statements either.

We don't do it, except on Year end IRA statements (they contain a substitute 5498)

We don't print SSN's on our customer statements... intentionally. Have just realized as a result of a concern brought to our attention from an elderly customer that the description on their monthly ACH payment from the Social Security Administration includes their SSN in one of the description fields and is therefore carried onto our statement. If their statement is stolen the thief will have their SSN.

We're just beginning to try and figure out how to suppress this data from our customer statements. You may want to look into this on your statements.

Somewhere tucked in my memory is something from Treasury that suggested they were working on removing the SSN from the ACH transaction record sent to bankers. I can't put my finger on it, and it certainly is still happening.

I was wondering if anyone had an update? i.e., I wanted to know whether there is any estimate on when the SSA might stop sending the SSN in the ACH Description?
