What are the possible risks of having blank deposit slips in the lobby? The only identifying number is the bank's routing number.

For one, the expense of stocking them and the loss of potential income for requiring customers to purchase deposit slips!

Someone could take a stack, have their account number encoded on the bottom and replace them. Most people would not notice the numbers or what they are for. anyone using them would have their funds deposited into the wrong account. Most banks, especially banks using imaging, would not catch the difference in numbers.

Do you ask for ID when someone uses a blank deposit ticket.

We took blank deposit tickets off the counters back in the 80's because it was to easy for someone to impersonate a customer and deposit fictious checks to an existing account with a less cash. Customers had to ask a teller for one.

We always asked for ID and verified we were actually dealing with the customer when ever a blank deposit ticket was requested from a teller.

I know personally of a number of institutions that could share some very sad (and costly) stories about having counter items available in the lobby. We also changed our policy and practice in the late 80's. Counter items are available upon request after we obtain proper ID.
