You need to keep it simple for a 4 year old to remember:
Most names are gender specific:

1. Sugar
2. Buddy
3. Dolly
4. Doc
5. Bud
6. Princess
7. Sam
8. Queenie
9. Peanut
10. Rex

Wait until you get the dog and check out it's personality. A name may be more fitting once you know/see the dog.

This is so true... Our Golden is named Molly, our Hound is Ginger. We didn't pick Molly's name; she was grown when we adopted her with an established name. We did choose Ginger which is fitting because she's a little feisty... kind of like the spice.

The guards won't tell me.
Grindcore the Destroyer... I named my Beta Fish this. It's a good name. My friend named his dog Kitty. So when he calls the dog he goes, "Here kitty kitty!" It makes the neighbors stare a lot.

My father-in-law named his dog Kitty, too!

I agree with finding out the pup's personality before naming it.

My cat lily earned her name because of her markings (black cat with a lily shaped white patch under her chin)

We have already met her. She is very sweet and gentle, but at the same time very active and hyper.

I had a Golden Retriever. Her name was Taffy. Registered as Todd's Golden Taffy.

It was unique.

We have a neighbor that named their Golden Retriever "Honey."

But personally my favorite dog name was a rottwiller that was in our puppy training class named "Capone" (as in Al Capone).

When I was little, I babysat for a family who lost their first dog. When they got their new one, they looked in fridge for something that was remotely the same color. The dog was then called "chardonay"...

A neighbor of mine used to have a Saint Bernard named "Little Runt". Mind you, the dog was two feet tall and weighed about 150 pounds, and enjoyed nothing better than sitting on small children and licking their faces...

We had a golden retriever when my kids were little that we named "Saige" because he was the color of Sagebrush. The name fit him perfect! and although we no longer have Saige, the kids still remember and talk about him often.

My husband and I are getting our 4 year old son a golden retriever pup this weekend and he doesn't know what he wants to name her. Anyone got any good names? Thanks for your help!

When I got a second dog, I could not decide what to name her. My fiance would call me and during the conversation, she would ask what the dogs had been up to (knowing that they would have chewed up something or done something funny). Every time, I would answer: Well, Ralph and Whatever her name is chewed up.... One night, after hearing this too many times, my fiance said, why don't you name her Winnie. I said, why Winnie. And she said, "Wehni, W-E-H-N-I." I told her that made even less sense than Winnie. Then she told me what it stood for: What-Ever Her Name Is. So, she was named Wehni.

Running and riding everywhere ...
I agree with getting to know their personality. My chocolate lab was Sam and my yellow lab was Woody. Sam was very athletic and almost cocky...Woody was as dumb as a stump but incredibly affectionate.
