I agree with getting to know their personality. My chocolate lab was Sam and my yellow lab was Woody. Sam was very athletic and almost cocky...Woody was as dumb as a stump but incredibly affectionate.

My first dog was Goldielocks. She was an all-American dog - part terrier and part dog. The name fit her perfectly.

When we got our first dog, we didnt name him until 2 days later. My youngest son loves Thomas the Train, so because of the dogs markings (brown/black), we named him after a train which is Toby. Then when we got our second dog, my youngest son did the same thing and we named her Emily. So now I have to worry about reproduction!?!? which BTW was not a good idea to have one of each gender.

We adopted our yellow lab when she was 1 years old. Her registered name is Colorado's Miss Molly. We hated the name when we first brought her home, but we didn't have the heart to change it. Ten years later we still have Molly and are really really glad we didn't change her name.

She was only part dog? What was the other part?

I like Mr. Green Jeans for a girl dog.
My BSA Specialist has her dog Luigi (great name).
I have an English Bull Dog named Chyna Bebe
And my sister used to have a gigantic English Mastiff (approx. 205 lbs.) that was named Daisy.

We had a female golden retriever named Sandy.....
We've also had dogs named:
German Sheppard named "Sarge" German Sheppard named "Max" Chocolate Lab named "Chip" Cocker Spaniel named "Chewy" Basset Hound named "Sophie"
We haven't had very good luck with dogs.We love them but quit getting them. With the exception of the German Sheppards and the basset, the rest of these were purchased when my son was little and he would get attached, they'd get killed or just die of old age. Too much heartache.....
The german sheppards were great watchdogs.
Sandy, the golden retriever, was horrible. Not that retrievers are horrible. They are great dogs....but this one was kinda goofy. Ran around like she was nuts, jumped on everyone and it seemed that we could not train her. She went to training, but they were not successful, and she had to drop out...... We had a hard time keeping her in her pen. She learned to climb the hurricane fence. Finally, we gave her to a couple. The guy wanted to train her to retrieve...... The chocolate lab was about 2 years old and was finally getting out of the puppy stage. On day he choked on a tennis ball and died.....Such a horrible death...no time to make it to the hospital. We tried.....
The last two named were the best dogs that we had. Both died of old age. The cocker spaniel lived to be about 10 and the basset was an older dog when we got her. Both were very laid back. My granddaughter could play with the basset without getting knocked down.....
Oh too much rambling...sorry

Part-time dog trainer here for our local humane society. I just wanted to give you a couple of tips when naming a new addition to your family. First, limit it's syllables to one or two, and have a hard sound at the end, like Buck or Spot. Secondly, choose a name that doesn't sound like any commands you will be using such as sit, stay, come, speak, down and heal. It lessens the dogs confusion (Did she just say my name or is it time to eat?), and mostly your frustration.
Congratulations on the new arrival.
P.S. Please don't forget to spay or neuter.

Unless you want to breed your dog, that is, or are willing to care for any puppies it might have.

I have a lab/basset mix named Buster. The name fits because he has busted up everything in my yard.

Besides the online sources, or naming for a marking, coloring or personality feature, you may also want to try looking in a baby name book. We've used that approach a number of times. Sometimes, though, you need to watch the meaninng of the name - I'm not sure if it is a self-fulfilling prophecy or just a coincidence, but my daughter named her Aussie "Hilda"(which means "woman warrior") and she has grown into one of the best watchdogs I have ever been around! My husband's dog, an Aussie named "Keiko" ("loving") is just that, although she is excellent at herding.
My son's dog, Rascal, is aptly named, and my dog is a Border Collie named "Bailey" (she picks up tricks very easily, so could easily have been a circus dog, hence the name).

We had a cocker spaniel that we named Halen (as in Van Halen). Our new cocker spaniel was already named when we adopted her and her name is Harley (although my two year old son still calls her "Good Girl").

My first mini-schnauzer was a female and her name was "Kizzy". My nephew couldn't quite get Kizzy out when he was little so he shortened it to "Z". I think everyone called her that from then on. Current mini-schnauzer is "Max"...big dog in a little dog's body! The name just came to me.

I have 3 cocker spaniels- Doodlebug, Cappi (short for Cappucino), and Flash. The names fit! Doodlebug is round and wiggly and has the friendliest expression, Cappi looks cute and friendly but is a bit snooty, and Flash, well, I rescued Flash and he came with the name. I wanted to change it but figured that since he was an older dog it would be hard to change his name. Turns out he didn't know his name at all but by the time we figured that out, he had decided that he was, indeed, Flash. He's about the most mellow old gentleman you could come across but when he gets out in the open, you can see where the inspiration for the name came from!

My husband wanted to name our dog Ditka after Mike Ditka or Butkis (spelling?) after Dick Butkis, but neither son could say either name without giggling. Then my husband suggested Dick and the boys fell off their chairs laughing. We went with Walter (for Payton, of course!).
