One of the bad things about living in Alaska is that the lack of sunlight causes your hair to darken, not in a nice way, but in a dull...somewhat greenish hue dark. Very awful. The first year I didn't realize it until I went home and people were agast about what I'd "done" to my hair. I went from gold red to dull brown/green (I swear there was a hint of green) in 9 months. So now, I dye my hair the original red. I can't wait until I live where I can quit dying my hair to it's silly original color I actually like my hair, it's thick, wavy, red...thank god for good genes in the family. My mother has the same hair, and still isn't grey (and she's not dying).

My hair is short and very curly (loose curls) in the back. The front is just messy. I finally got a perm, just in the front and now they match. I also color my hair, pretty much to the natural color to cover the grey and brighten it up.

My problem, is that I have dyed my hair for so long, that I don't really know my natural color. Or at least my roots aren't the color I remembered before I started coloring.

I have auburn hair, but started getting grey hair at age 17! So now, I dye it close to the original color, and have it highlighted. That seems to hide the grey longer. If I let it go and didn't color it, I would look quite a bit older in no time. Most of my friends like my hair short, but hubby likes it long, so I'm trying to let it grow. It's at that "YUCK, I can't do anything with it" stage right now. sigh... The things we do for love...

Do you do it yourself? I want to do this also. How does it work out? What kind (brand) do you use? I am going bald and I think that the less hair a man has on his head, the shorter what's left should be. Just remember this: The Curly-look looks much better than the Larry-look for those of use with too little hair to get the Moe-look.

MOML and I have a disagreement. He wonders if he should color his hair, which is now almost all a dark shade of gray. I don't want him to, especially since his best friend does, and in the sun his hair looks maroon. (Definately not right, given his age!) I think MOML looks great as he is and have told him so.
I however, color my hair. When I suggest that maybe I might stop, and just let myself go grey (which looks like it will be more like white), he says no, I shouldn't. I have, over the years, gone lighter, since my natural hair color was almost black/brown, and at my age that is definately not natural. I have had a number of people say they were surprised I colored my hair, and that it looks very natural. But it is a pain to do, and I want to spare MOML from getting into this trap.
When I do finally go grey, it will seem like overnight, since I have been coloring over the gradual change. I will shock a few people!

I started getting gray around 16. How depressing. Of course it has progressed. I typically color my hair darker shades- my natural color is brown, but as soon as the roots start coming in, you can see all my gray!!
Right now I have blonde highlights, which has eliminated that concern for the time being.
I don't like getting old.

When I saw the name of this thread I started singing -
She asks me why I'm just a hairy guy I'm hairy noon and night Hair that's a fright I'm hairy high and low Don't ask me why Don't know It's not for lack of break Like the Grateful Dead Darling
Gimme head with hair Long beautiful hair Shining, gleaming, Streaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there hair Shoulder length or longer Here baby, there mama Everywhere daddy daddy
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair Flow it, show it Long as God can grow it My hair
Let it fly in the breeze And get caught in the trees Give a home to the fleas in my hair A home for fleas A hive for bees A nest for birds There ain't no words For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder Of my...
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair Flow it, show it Long as God can grow it My hair
I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty Oily, greasy, fleecy Shining, gleaming, streaming Flaxen, waxen Knotted, polka-dotted Twisted, beaded, braided Powdered, flowered, and confettied Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!
Oh say can you see My eyes if you can Then my hair's too short
Down to here Down to there Down to where It stops by itself
They'll be ga ga at the go go When they see me in my toga My toga made of blond Brilliantined Biblical hair
My hair like Jesus wore it Hallelujah I adore it Hallelujah Mary loved her son Why don't my mother love me?
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair Flow it, show it Long as God can grow it My hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair Flow it, show it Long as God can grow it My hair

I've been coloring my hair for about 6 years now (I'm 44). My father was prematurely gray and I used to just highlight it. Now it's too much to highlight, so I color it a brownish red (close to my former natural color). It's also naturally curly and I keep it about shoulder length.
For me, I love a man with gray hair. My husband has a beautiful head of gray hair and I just adore it.

Why is it, men looked distinguished with grey hair, and women look old?

I keep my hair at what I've started to call "career-woman length." You know, just 1-3 inches past the shoulders. Too long and you start to look unprofessional. I had been growing it out for my boyfriend and it just got scraggly looking. At career length, it looks nice and full and neat. I still have bad dhair days, btu at least they aren't as bad as before!

Career woman length? Honey I'm a career woman and my hair is 7 inches below my shoulders. My assistant's hair hits her bumm, and believe me she's a professional! Both of us are always well groomed, and our hair is full and neat. I don't mean to be grumpy, but you've just said we're unprofessional...which is a bit judgemental now isn't it? You might want to rethink what makes a good career woman. It's not about hair length!

I fell for the "must cut your hair cuz your X years old" stuff my mother fed me. Every time she would see me she would tell me my hair was too long. I finally cut it (about four inches above my shoulders) and I HATE IT! Do not let anyone tell you to cut your hair if you like it. BTW - I'm under 35!

i did not say anyone is unprofessional for having their hair at any sort of length... i've just made an observation that most career or business women (at least here in southern california) have hair this length, and the few that i have seen who have long hair look unprofessional. one woman here with long hairr looks more like a pornstar than a supervisor. and my case, when my hair was long, it looked liek i just came from the beach. my statement was an observation or inference. if you can keep your hair long without looking liek a hippie or a lingerie model, then all the power to you!

Oh, now there is evidence that smoking pot causes gray hair?
First of all, I don't appreciate that comment one bit. I DO NOT smoke pot. I have in the past...and actually I had gray hair before I ever started smoking pot.
