I'm currently in Operations but find myself enjoying the fraud investigation, BSA, etc. stuff more. I would like to eventually just do this...

What type of educational background do you have/need? I am willing to go to college but have no idea what degree would be most beneficial.

While there are those who become security professionals without a law enforcement background, in my opinion it makes the job easier especially if fraud preventionand investigation are part of your responsibilites. This is because you have experience writing investigative reports for the police and prosecutors giving you a leg up on those who present poorly written reports. It also gives you credibility with law enforcement and opens doors otherwise closed.

I would suggest you join ASIS International and the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators to create networking opportunities. You can then work towards obtaining professional certification, something that is not obtained by attending a three day seminar but through years of work and the taking of a comprehensive exam.
