If you were to put together a loan training program where would you start? We are a $2bill bank and growing and I was asked to put together a program to train new lending officers. Where do I start? Did I mention the bank does not want to spend money on outside training companies or consultants? HELP!!

Is this program to train new LO's how to make loans or is it loan compliance training? If it is compliance training, I would start with the lending reg's, B, C, Z, etc.,then move into BSA for lenders. From my own experience, try to make the training as short as possible and focus on things they really need to know and speak in as plain a language as you can. Use a lot of examples that they can relate to, otherwise, you will lose them. Most lenders I know have a very short attention span when it comes to anything but lending!!!

I agree with renniks-keep it basic. I am in the process of revising our training, both product and compliance. We determined, as renniks noted, the attention span is not very long, and if any of the new hires is inexperienced, it is that much more difficult. We are starting with "Mortgage 101" which includes a history of our institution, our expectations of the loan officer, loan terminology, calculations, etc. then sales, product and compliance training (spread over a week or so). We think it will be a better approach by non inundating them and assuming they know certain things. We also show 2 videos-one on fair lending and one on privacy. Our first go around with this is in early November.
Good luck

I like puppets. I could pay attention longer if you just had some puppets. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go drink my milk and take my nap on my little red and blue mat.
