We have a customer who had a deposited item returned NSF. OK - no problem, we redeposit. It comes back again NSF days later. It is our bank policy to return at this point, so we do. It comes back again today NSF - meaning the customer got it back from us in the mail, then deposited it again himself. At this point, I can't read the stamping on the back (deposit date, all that good stuff) and do not want to have it redeposited again in it's condition. I am returning it and wish to stamp it "Do not Re-present". Is there any regulation or code against this? I know the paying bank usually stamps it, but are we able to as well? Thanks!

A stamp will not prevent them from presenting the item again - sounds like a great time for a customer call to have a chat with them regarding what would work best for both the customer and the bank.

The depositary bank may add a "do not redeposit" stamp. It's only an attempt to communicate a rule which the customer may simply not know about and alert tellers who might otherwise accept the item for deposit.

Obviously, the customer may still present the item after it has been through the clearing system twice, but it needs to be over the counter at the drawee bank or as a collection item.

Why did the teller accept it? (Or am I missing something?)

Very simple solution-Put a supervisor lockout on the account. No transaction can take place unless a supervisor reviews the transaction. Most systems have remarks you can put on an account alerting the teller to the specific problem. This should not this difficult.

Well, in conjunction with the stamp I would be punching out the MICR line so that it would kick out when processed. Jokerman & BSA - this customer has huge deposits every day that don't require fine sorting through by the tellers.

I think I may get a stamp and a nice hole punch soon since nothing prevents me from having to keep accepting these "old and tired" checks.

Gwen- I agree on punching a hole through the MICR. But make sure you communicate it with item processing not to just throw a corrective strip on it and send it through.

I've had to tell them that if there's a hole punched in it, there's a reason. :P

The above comments are great - but I still think you should start with a visit with the customer. Just arbitrarily starting to take some of these actions without customer communication is the prefect way to have the customer take his business elsewhere. After visiting with them, none of these action may be necessary.
