Hmmm, you mean means you disapprove of something. I thought the little yellow guy with the frown was just absquatulating!?

Yikes! One definition I found of absquatulate is "to die". That's surely not what we are talking about?

I'm almost afraid to ask, but are there other definitions for absquatulating other than "to die"? I consulted Webster's NewWorld Dictionary and found nothing!! Also, regarding BOL User Guidelines. As a relatively new user of BOL, I have to say a few things: First of all, I am SO glad that this valuable resource is available. The knowledge of the BOL "gurus" and a number of others in the BOL virtual community has been extremely helpful to me! Secondly, I would like to speak in defense of "newcomers" in general, in hopes that they, like myself, post a question only after having done research on their own. Sometimes, depending on the situation, it is more difficult to pin down the answer you are looking for. Finally, some day I hope to be able to provide answers for newcomers as the "gurus" have done for me. (And I think that the moral support and a little frivolity now and then make this site unique)!!!! Thanks for listening and Happy Holidays!! Vicki

"The vibrant energy of American English sometimes appears in the use of Latin affixes to create jocular pseudo-Latin "learned" words. Midland absquatulate has a prefix ab--, "away from," and a suffix --ate, "to act upon in a specified manner," affixed to a nonexistent base form --squatal--, probably suggested by squat ."

ab·squat·u·late ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ab-skwchu-lat) intr.v. Midwestern & Western U.S. ab·squat·u·lat·ed, ab·squat·u·lat·ing, ab·squat·u·lates
1. a) To depart in a hurry; abscond: “Your horse has absquatulated!” (Robert M. Bird). b) To die.
2. To argue.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Mock-Latinate formation, purporting to mean “to go off and squat elsewhere”.]
This is from the link from the other thread. I thought I'd cut & paste it for those who can't access other sites due to their IT limits.

I like Ken's idea as well. And I would like to piggy back on that with one of my wishes: When responding to an inquiry or an impolite poster, reply to the person who posed the original question, or made the impolite remark, rather than replying to the last poster in the thread.

This thread is getting lengthy, but I just wanted to add that, besides being polite, we need to remember that some people are thrown into this compliance game without being given any tools, etc. While that is irresponsible of the bank, it happens all the time. So..they may not even know how to research. I cannot tell you how many times I have actually given a copy of my bookmarks to people and they were thrilled. They just didn't know where to start. Sometimes, answering the question, and providing the cite as others have said, goes a long way to getting a person on the road to know how to be a compliance officer.
I like the idea of the frown...sometimes answers are tending toward rude and there just is no call for that. While it may work with a close friend, it doesn't always come across the same way in email or a website like this.

Thank you Kathleen. Research is a love of mine, I do it all day long. However I am one of those that have taken a postion that is mine to mold. But it is really hard to know where to start when every single reg. is an issue and important. Its nice to have some place to go so that when I am second guessing myself and questioning my knowledge, I get a response that proves I'm not crazy.

In reply to:
The old saying "Can't we all just get along?" comes to mind.
Heh Heh, that always cracks me up when I see it. Ummm No But it's a lovely wish
I'm going with the face test. I've seen some posts that I thought were a bit insulting, and hope never to have been personally picking on someone myself. I too like to hear others perspectives on regulatory issues. I only deal with CRA, but find that with this regulation as well as others, reading the reg isn't really where it's at. It's the people who go beyond the words and successfuly interpret a point of the regulaton in a way that benefits us all, that are my favorite folks to read about. Thats why I may bring up a question, which may seem rudementary to some, but I believe may have another view to be discovered.
I also was a rookie just a few years ago in the regulatory world. I only wish I'd have had a resource like BOL to tap into. If a newbie has a question about CRA and due to things they've read here, they feel intimidated to post, they are welcome to book mark my name. I'm always happy to help anyone! I get a great deal of pleasure helping others and sharing what I've learned as well as the creative ways I've played with the regulaton.
I remember the days after I was hired when I sat in my office and thought...."what the hell do I do for a living and how do I do it!" If I can start anyone on a road, I'm thrilled to do so. (This of course means when I go into full time consulting I'll bill for back time...)

Good Ol' misunderstood Rodney King spoke that didn't he? After his arrest for DWI, Jay Leno suggested that what he actually said was: "Can't we all just get a Long.....Island Iced Tea"

While I agree whith much of what has been stated on this post, I will have to admit that prior to becoming a BOL member I was an anon. poster. There has also been a few times I posted purposely as anon. Was it due to lack of self confidence? Or possibly the fact that I didn't want anyone to know I posed such a question? Or, maybe I didn't want other staff members or local competitors knowing what I was inquiring about. Thank God for the BOL creators! I've seen alot of repetitive questions, and answer's. BOL is a site where you get constant on-going training. The training is invaluable and you learn from the best, and most importantly respect. Well that's my two cents worth.

My co-worker and I have decided that we are going to bring in a blow horn to all meetings. That way when they start questioning the law/our authority we just sound the horn to let them know they are out of compliance! We should have a card on BOL that states "It's the LAW, any questions?"
