We accepted a check for deposit and the MICR line is for out of state bank (routing number begins with 0410).
Under the bank name in the body of the check it shows "ACH 06100005"
Is this a payable through check where we would use the 0610
to determine if it is local or nonlocal?
The "ACH" is new to me.

The ACH 06100005 indicates that any ACH transactions be routed to 06100005. Most banks now put the RT where they want their ACH transactions processed. This particular RT belongs to Bank of America. Having worked there in the past, I know that they process all their ACH items for several states in one site. Is the check you are looking at also a Bank of America check in another state?

To be a payable through check that requires your use of the printed (not encoded) number, it must conform to § 229.36(e) of Regulation CC.

PGS,
Acknowledging John's comment, like hbComp I am befuddled by the reference to "ACH." In your opinion, is the check issuer attempting to say that if the check is converted via ACH rules to a POP or ARC entry, it should be routed to the number shown?

Actually the ACH RT is 061000104 (Suntrust Atlanta GA)
The Routing number on the bottom of the check is 06400046 (Suntrust in Tennessee). I was with C&S/NationsBank for years so I just have their RT engrained in my mind!

So I guess this means it is not a local check since it does not say (payable through)?

For Regulation CC purposes, I agree, it is not a "payable through" check because it does not meet the requirements John linked.

However, I'd still like to know what the drawee bank expects others to do with the reference.

John/hbComp, no. I'm saying that if the account owner (maker) wants to set up direct deposit or an ACH draft for payment of one of their obligations, the ACH originator should use RT 06100005 rather than the RT that is on the check or deposit ticket. Typically you have to send a voided check or deposit ticket (deposit tickets sometimes have internal RTs)to whomever you are getting the ACH transaction set up with. It was an attempt to provide the correct ACH RT to the originator.

hbComp, I'm confused with your reference to SunTrust. What bank is the check drawn on? If you are saying this is a Suntrust Check and has ACH RT 06100005(2) which belongs to Bank of America, I'd say there's something not quite right with the check.
