USSBA Marching Band Championship competition is this Saturday at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Md. Does anyone else have a son/daughter performing? Should be a great show! USSBA

Is this drum and bugle corps? I love watching that, espcially in person. The music is great as well as the pagentry. MOML used to be in one, but he called it the Drunk and Bungle Corps!

This is a high school competition circuit. It includes many of the best HS bands from the northeast, but it is starting to expand into the south, texas and california. There is a very big Drum Corp influence in the shows that competition bands do.

Here is a video shot about a month ago when my son's band performed at Giants Stadium. Immaculata

Yes yes!! I will be watching. As much as I hate to say this I was in my highschool marching band for 4 years, going to state each time it came around. I have friends in one of the bands attending.

Which band?

I am one of the band dads that helps set up the Pit for our band.

I was a marching band geek, too -- and mighty proud of it! Heck, I married the drum major!

I absolutely love to watch field show competitions, whether they are high school or drum & bugle corp level. The amount of talent and dedication is incredible!

Here's some cool footage of a drum line performance: Click me!

Big-dog, I was so thankful for the parents who volunteered to help! I was a pit member, and remember how much stuff there was to lug out to the sidelines! Hey, do you know if the USSBA competition will be televised? I'll TiVo it if I can!

There is something great about standing on the field about to play, audience completely silent (you could even here the drum major counting off) and all you can see is a huge stadium of people. I loved the rush that it gave me to perform. I loved my marching band. They went to state this year and competed in the San Antonio Bands of America Super Regional. They placed 9th (I think.) I miss it so much.

Unfortunately it is not being televised.

I was also in marching band, actually 8 years worth. marched in HS and 4 years in college - JMU - one of the top college marching bands in the US. There is nothing like walking out onto the field and hearing the roar of the crowd. At JMU, the stands actually filled up at halftime.

My son's band won the NJ state championship this year for Group 6 open - bands of over 135 members. Their show is based on Pearl Harbor and is a very emotional tribute to those who served at Pearl Harbor.

1982, I was in Harrisonburg for the MBA East Regionals, saw JMU perform as the guest band at the evening finals. THEY ROCKED!! I can understand why the stands would fill up at halftime. I had 7 years of marching band: 4 in HS and 3 in Senior Drum and Bugle Corps(Hanover Lancers). Great times, sometimes miss them much.

I saw them in 1982, as they did "In the Stone" by Earth Wind and Fire. Being a former tuba player myself it was great to see that.

I swear there were 15 tubas (don't remember the exact number), all in a straight line and one very cool Bari sax player at the end of the line dancing on and off the field. It was incredible. I think I still have the pirated cassette tape of the performance somewhere at home.

Only 12 back then, thats all the tubas the band had. Now they march 24 when they have enough to play them. I think there were only 23 this year.

Here is a link to the JMU MRD website that has MP3's of the band over the years. JMU MRD's
