On my way to work this morning there was a small deer (I believe it was born this past spring) no taller than the hood of my car (I drive a Honda Accord) standing on the road in front of me. Of course I stopped and it kept looking around all confused. It started to wander off onto the state highway and I saw what was going to happen. I laid on the horn but it didn't do any good - I saw it get hit and killed right in front of me.
Of course I know these things happen, but it doesn't help the images that won't leave my head.
Thanks for listening.

I'm sorry too Skittles. It does hurt to see something like that. I know that happens, and I cringe everytime I see road kill, but that is much worse. Again, I'm so sorry.

Last October I saw a doe standing on the other side of the highway walking AWAY fom my car. I slowed w-a-y down to be cautious. Then, out of the blue, she turned and ran right in front of me. Needless to say, my Buick LeSabre creamed her and tossed her to the side of the highway. I think I sat and shook for 15 minutes after it happened. The problem was that I had another 2 hours through mountains to get to my home. I was petrified and drove mostly in the middle of the 2way highway with one foot on the gas and one on the brakes. While in the mountains, an elk was standing in the big middle of the road. I completely stopped and waited for him to decide which way to go before proceeding. It's a VERY scary event, but you do finally get over it. You are just a little more cautious in the future.

Oh no, I am so sorry. That is the worst feeling ever to see something like that happen. I have to conciously make myself look away if I see that I am approaching an animal on the side of the road, or even if I see skinny strays wandering around.
Before I had my son I was notorious for bringing home all kinds of strays to find their owners. Once I had taken this dog in, he was obviously someone's pet, well kept and I could see where he had had a surgery recently. I called all the vets around and found his owner. I took him home, and they were ecstatic to have him back (it had been like a week before I found them). I noticed they didn't have a fence. The next week I saw that dog out again. Before I knew it he was out in the street and got hit by a fast moving car. He didn't make it. I blamed myself for taking him back when I saw that the people didn't have a fenced in yard, I should have just kept driving... I know how you feel and I hope you feel better soon.

It is weird, because I hunt deer, but seeing them or any other animal, even a bird or squirrel, run over on the road bothers me. Probably becasue it seems so senseless, a waste, and the animal many times suffers a great deal. With hunting, I only hunt what we will eat and with a gun, the suffering is reduced.

Skittles, I feel the same way, I am one of those people who break for squirrels... I hate seeing animals hurt, period.

I'm so sorry Skittles, that had to be so hard to see and to get out of your head today.

I know how you feel Skittles. Once when driving thru the country a kitten ran out in front of me. There was now way to avoid hitting it. I was so mad at the owners for letting it run loose and cried the rest of the way to my destination.

When I was about 13 I tried to save a turtle in the road. I was standing on the shoulder about to run across and get it when a truck purposely swerved to hit the turtle. I was so pissed!!! I screamed all kinds of cuss words at that guy.

Skittles, I had a deer trauma the other morning on the way to work. I was driving in and I saw all these highschool age kids pulled off to the side of the road and one of the trucks was smashed up. I stopped and asked if everyone was OK. They said a deer jumped out in front of them as they were driving and they hit it. I continued over this little rise and there was the deer lying in the road, trying valiantly to get up. I cried the rest of the way into work. I only pray there was a cop with a gun on the scene shortly and that the deer was put out of its misery. I hate seeing animals suffer. I feel for you.

Sweetpeas - that was much worst than mine. At least in mine the deer only struggled for about 5 seconds before being still. I feel for you, too. It's a hopeless feeling to not be able to help.

I saw on the news last week that on the first day of deer season a man was killed when a deer went through the windshield of his pick up truck. It's not only dangerous for them but for motorists as well.

Well, (as my father always says) I'm a real bleeding heart for animals, so I hate to see any of them suffer. I know these things happen, but I sure hate to see it.
