I believe I was under the mistaken impression that the only hold you could put on a cashier's check was a large deposit hold (give the customer $5,000) availability. In reading the regulation it looks as though that isn't the case. Can someone help me a little bit here - can you place other holds also?

You can place any exception hold on a cashier's check, assuming the underlying reasons support the exception chosen. For example, you could place a repeat overdraft exception hold if your customer has been frequently overdrawn (or would have been if items had been paid). Or you could place a reasonable cause to doubt collectibility hold if there were such circumstances present. You could place a new account exception hold if the account meets the definition, but keep in mind that under a new account exception hold, cashier's checks still must be available by the 9th business day after date of deposit. You could place a redeposited item exception hold if in fact the cashiers check is being redeposited. You can also, as you already are aware, place a large deposit exception hold on the amount over $5,000. And finally, you certainly can place an emergency conditions exception hold on a cashiers check if such emergency conditions do exist.

Thanks, Jim. So basically a cashier's check can be held just like anything else - for exception hold reasons - with the exception of the 'new account' hold.
