We have customers who have a savings account but do not keep more than a few cents in the account. A deposit is made via ACH and then the same day or next they come in and withdraw it. The balance is usually so small at month end that we are only able to service charge the account the .13 in the account because we do not allow a service charge to overdraw a savings account. We also have a cash withdrawal fee if the customers gets cash over a specific number of times that is assessed at month end. We are unable to collect these services charges either. What are other banks doing? Thanks for the advice.

If you allowed the savings to go into the negative your fees would be paid the next time an ACH was deposited.

When we adopted new excessive withdraw fees last year we set our savings to allow overdrafts. No problems so far.

Most of our banks have a maintenance fee if the balance falls below a certain amount any day of the month or quarter (varies by bank). Most use $200 as the minimum daily balance to avoid the service charge.

We recently changed our system to overdraw savings accounts for this reason.
