Can anyone tell me when they send out their overdrawn letters, how many letters they send and how far apart before they force close a checking account. How long will you let a customer have an overdrawn account before you force close. Thanks for any help you can give me.

We start calling them at 10 days, send a letter at 15 days, send a letter at 30 days and charge off an account at 45 days.

We call every overdrawn account every day, mail out notices for every overdraft check/ACH showing if each item was paid or returned and showing the fee(s) assessed, mail out "continuous overdraft" notices every day starting with the 5th day (also showing the $5 daily continuous overdraft fee), and send out a formal letter after 30 days of being overdrawn. If it remains continuously overdrawn, we close the account after 60 to 90 days, at the discretion of management and based upon any response from the customer during any of the attempts at contact.

We send "reminder" letters to customers at 10, 20 and 30 days, then send a "your account has been closed" letter at 35 days.

OCC Joint Guidance says that checking accounts are not allowed to remain overdrawn for more than 60 days. (or 45 days for Credit Unions, I believe)

We send an overdrawn notice for each item and then reminder letters at 20, 30 and 45 days before sending the "your account has been closed" letter at 60 days.

I have noticed we have several accounts that have been overdrawn more than 60 days. Is it required to close them?

One of the first thing auditors and examiners look at is how old are your overdrawn items and they don't want to see any over 60 days.

We send letter 1 after 7 days, letter 2 after 14 days and then we close them.
