I just received a cashier's check as payment for an eBay auction. The check is from Border Trust ( in Maine). I have a very bad feeling about this check. I used "Routing Tool" online to check out the routing number printed on my document (011400485) it came back as "rejected" So I did a reverse search by entering the Bank Name & was advised that their routing number is (011201115)
I plan to take it to my bank in the morning & let them check it out, but am curious if anyone else has seen anything.
The "buyer" on eBay purchased close to $100K in 48 hours and that just seems very suspicious, as he is buying up high end Proof Coin Sets, Diamonds, Watches & Electronics.
This began on 5-16-03 & he was suspended by 5-20-03...
Needless to say, I have no plans to send him ANYTHING until I am sure about the legitimacy of this document...
I would appreciate any info.

Where the heart is
While I haven't seen any particular announcements for counterfeit items drawn on "Border Trust", there are so many fraudulent items out there that it is difficult to keep up.

This is a link to Border Trust's home page Border Trust which I found on the FDIC's Directory of Institutions. You can try calling them directly to ask if the item is legitimate, or wait to see what your bank says. Be sure to tell your bank that you think the item may be a counterfeit.

As I'm sure you are aware, the internet action payment scam has cost many victims thousands of dollars.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I plan to get my bank involved with contacting the Border Trust.
The person that sent me the check purchased items from about 29 sellers on eBay..most items were at least $2,000.00 & up to $13,000.00 ...and since the items (coins, diamonds etc.) are very easy to sell- this whole situtation just seems to scream FRAUD!! What a burglar!!
Thanks again,
Lynda

Lynda-
You're right to be suspicious in this case, and Bonnie's advice is good. The only way you can know if that check is good is to contact Border Trust directly. I don't know how willing they are to verify items, so it may be necessary to ask your bank to intervene, but I would certainly recommend that you try contacting them yourself first.
