Can the bank give out a copy of a CTR to the customer on who we're filing? Is this legal?
If not, why not?

Just curious, why would anyone need a copy of the CTR? It merely provides information the customer is already aware of.
They no longer indicate suspicious activity (which would now be on a SAR, which the customer wouldn't be aware of anyway.)

I agree with you. But the person requesting the document is a bullish attorney who thinks he has a right to have a copy and has gone so far as to call this banks attorney to voice his complaint that we, the bank, wouldn't give him a copy. I'd be more than happy to accomodate this guys ego if I knew it were legal.

I looked through the IRS website and couldn't find a thing. Did you call the reliable IRS office?
I am now very curious.

Yes, you may share the CTR with the customer. Check out this prior discussion on the same topic.

Some folks want to know what is on the report and there is nothing wrong with that. In some cases a business customer may be audited and these help in their audit trail as well.

Thanks for your help. I've got a call in to the 800 number just as a safety precaution. But the link to the previous posting regarding the issue has been a tremendous help.

It's always been legal to provide copies of CTRs. You can charge for it if you wish.
