I don't know if this is the appropriate forum for this topic, but I'm going to start here. If I should post somewhere else, please advise.

Our teller system is designed to where transaction and validation information is stamped on the bank's copy of the deposit form. The customer is given a receipt (a generic form with the bank logo, info about transactions made after 3PM, etc.) with the transaction and validation information on it.

The transaction and validation information consists of:

Type of deposit (DDA - SV, etc)
Account Number
Transaction #
Date and Time
Amount of Deposit

The information on the bank's copy indicates the entire account number but the information on the customer's receipt only shows the last 4 digits of the account number. Some of the tellers are processing deposits in the wrong order in order to have the entire account number printed on the customer's receipt.

I know that the FACT Act mandates truncation of numbers but it only addresses electronic debit and credit card transactions. Are there any written restrictions for deposit receipts? Since our teller system is designed to truncate the number on deposit receipts, it really bothers me that tellers are doing it backwards. Can anyone give me some good ammunition to use to advise management that tellers should process transactions correctly so that the entire account number does not show on the receipt?

Lots of deposit receipts get tossed out or simply dropped, without shredding. If you were a bank customer whose receipt was misplaced, would you want someone who picks it up to be able to see your account number and the date, time and amount of a deposit to the account? Many banks use that information in challenge questions when dealing with telephone calls from alleged customers, so when the information gets into the wrong hands, you've got exposure.

Have you discussed the problem with a teller whom you've seen process transactions so that the full account number appears on the receipt? In a discussion, you can learn whether it's simple sloppiness, a system design problem that makes the proper sequence ungainly, or a "real" reason -- the teller wants the customer to have the account number. If you can identify a teller who is doing it because the customer wants the number on the receipt, you'll know that you might need to retrain your customers and tellers (and give them both the reason for the security).

Thanx, John......especially your first comment. I hadn't thought of that angle yet. Great ammunition! I appreciate it very much.
