As space for storage of docs. is becoming costly, we are moving towards scanning a lot of paperwork. Now, with this in mind, are there any regs that forbid us to not keep originally signed documents, especially when an account is closed? We are considering scanning sign. cards, safdeposit boxe docs, etc. Comments welcome!

We scan everything! As long as you can recall the image under the same time frame that you would need the paper you should be fine. For example, don't let your system purge closed account images, you need to have documents related to a closed deposit account for five years from the date the account was closed. Just watch your 'purging'!!

Also make sure the system can demostrate that the scanned docs cannot be altered.

Most importantly, make sure the people doing the scanning know what documents they are looking at. The system is useless if the documents are not labeled correctly and filed consistently. It would seem obvious, but I'm amazed at how haphazard this gets done.
