Wasn't it Grand Toreno or something like that

I don't think that's what GTO stands for, but my very first car was a 1974 Gran Torino Sport--the Disco Torino, if you will! Only in retrospect can I laugh about the horror of being an 18 year old female at the University of Alabama tooling around in a brown land barge {although it did have a big ole Ford 400 in it }! It wasn't conducive to picking up guys, but I could sure run 'em down!

My favorite car of all time--1968 Camaro Convertible, candy apple red.

BTW, what was the big grandma car that had back doors that opened backwards?

They were called suicide doors. I think several make had that type of door. I think even Caddys even had them.

'57 Ford Thunderbird convertible, red. I'll second the nomination on the '69 Chevelle SS 396.

The Corvair? Thanks for the memories, Don. In the 70's we built a dune buggy for off-road use using the business end of a Corvair fashioned onto a 'handcrafted' chassis. Ran it for years. All us kids learned how (not) to drive in it. A riot!

Perfect John - did you have one?

More useless trivia:

- I've heard that it means either 1) grand touring, or 2)in Italian, "a race car made to be street legal" (because it was first used on Ferraris). I prefer the later. Pedal to the metal baby!

- The "GT" that is stuck behind so many sports car names now is an abbreviation of the immortal GTO.

When were you a freshman at Univ of AL. I was a freshman there at one time. I may have seen your large barge.

67 Mustang Convertible.

Have to agree with this one.

What color Rusty? I would go with red, but I also like the pale yellow very much also. Not sure if that was offered in '67 or '69, but I like it 'em both anyway.

I'd have to go with red or a custom blue -dark and metallic.

Ha! I'll be! Good eye, Dave.

Leave it to us Americans to try and change the original into something bigger and better. The Italian GTO was Gran Turismo, but the 1963 Pontiac changed it to Grand Turissimo. (like in music - "Forte" is Italian for loud; "Fortissimo" means very loud) Maybe we figured we had more roads to tour, so we had to increase the turismo!!

Or - maybe the press writer just couldn't spell.

I think it was about a 67 Mustang my cousin had in Surfside SC when I was a kid. Convertible. Red. And Roger Miller "You Can't Rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd" on the 8 track. Good times. Memorable times.

Following is a list of the most desired classic muscle cars with the year, model/style, cubic inches and horse power (listed by number of votes):

Year Model and Style CI HP
1970 Chevy Chevelle LS6 454 450
1969 Pontiac GTO Judge R Air IV 400 370
1970 Plymouth Hemi-Cuda 426 425
1967 Shelby GT-500(Mustang) 428 355
1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt 427 425
1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi 426 425
1970 Buick Gran Sport Stage 1 455 370
1965 Pontiac Tempest GTO 3x2 389 360
1969 Mustang Boss 429 375
1969 Camaro Z28 R/S SS 302 290
1971 Plymouth Hemi-Cuda 426 425
1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 4-4-2 W30 455 370
1967 Corvette L71 Tri-Power 427 435
1969 Dodge Charger 6 pack 440 375
1969 Dodge Charger R/T Hemi 426 425
1969 Chevy Chevelle SS 396 375
1966 AC Shelby Cobra 427 425
1969 Corvette L88 ZL1 427 450
1969 Mustang Mach I SCJ 428 365
1969 Camaro Copo ZL1 427 425

I'd take the 1966 (or 1965-1967) AC Shelby Cobra - only 350 made during all of the AC years (3), so I'd go for a kit car with about 40,000 of those in the world at this time. The above cars are considered "investments" so if you want one - have a real thick wallet or get to know a banker real well that lends money.

Who remembers, "How does the man who drives the snow plow, get to the snow plow?"

While the bug is dependable, it just wasn't as kewl.

1968 Lincoln Continental - Faux vinyl top, leather interior, suicide doors, (doors were 6 freakin' inches thick by the way), 455 cc's, 4 barrel carb, - oh what a thing of beauty to drive down the street with THE BEST OF KISS playing on a 8 TRACK STEREO (while getting 5 miles per gallon....)

One of the best things about that car was you could fit the WORLD in the back seat and take it for a drive. That was a handy feature since you needed all those folks to pitch in for gas!

And my vote for worst designed car ever......

The Pontiac Fiero! Nothing like having the engine...right next to your ear! Not to mention the comforting smell of leaking gas from the poorly designed fuel system.

Bonnie - I had a Fiero for about 3 months - got it from my sister - it was actually a fun car to drive and it had the speakers right in the headrest for some good headbanging!

But the Forum is "Classic Cars." Never has a foreign car ever been considered a classic in the mind of real car collectors.

Does that mean the Mercedes Gull Wing (If I had one) would have to go

It may be vintage or historic but not usually refered to as "Classic." My sister-in-law's father has several classics from the 40's and 50's and belongs to several car clubs and according to him and everyone else I know who participate in the collection of classics, say foreign cars don't fall into the category of "Classic."

We have a 1964 1/2 convertable Mustang with less than 10,000 original miles on in, maroon paint job and white interior. That's the parade car. Then we have a 1966 Chevy Biscayne with a flame paint job on it that attracts young and old when we take it out for a drive. Both are fun cars.

1965 Stingray Corvette - white with red leather interior - I'll own one someday.

My dad has a 1955 Chevy Stepside pickup - bought it brand new and is now fixing it up, almost all original equipment. Whoever takes over my Dad's farm inherits the truck. He also has a 1989 Buick Riveria with only 50,000 miles, what a beauty.

Favorite car I ever owned was 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Berlinetta. The color was Claret and it had a gold pinstripe. Lots of memories with that car.

Here it is:

Had the 4 speed, 273 high performance four barreled engine, positrac rearend, dropped a big cam into it, added some G50 tires, airshocks and traction bars and I was in heaven - off course that was in the mid 70's.
