Cashing On-us Checks for Non-customers

Answered by:

Question:
Are there any regulations regarding a financial institution's cashing of "on-us" checks for non-customers? Any limits on the fee that can be associated with that service? What is a typical fee for such a service?
Answer:

There have been a number of discussions on this topic in BankersOnline's Bankers' Threads. If you search the Threads, you will find impassioned arguments on both sides of the issue. You'll also see that any limitations on fees associated with the practice would be specific to the state the bank operates in and would not apply to federally-chartered institutions. I'm not aware of any data on a "typical" fee.
