Yeah, Denny Hastert has definitely been a far right-winger. I mean he's...uh, he's...what has he done, again?

Well, let's compare his ratings to Pelosi's from the same ontheissues.org source:

• Rated 0% by NARAL, indicating a pro-life voting record. (Dec 2003)
• Rated 17% by the ACLU, indicating an anti-civil rights voting record. (Dec 2002)
• Rated 100% by the US COC, indicating a pro-business voting record. (Dec 2003)
• Rated 25% by the NEA, indicating anti-public education votes. (Dec 2003)
• Rated 92% by the Christian Coalition: a pro-family voting record. (Dec 2003)
• Rated 100% by CATO, indicating a pro-free trade voting record. (Dec 2002)
• Rated A by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record. (Dec 2003)
• Rated 0% by the AFL-CIO, indicating an anti-union voting record. (Dec 2003)
• Rated 0% by the ARA, indicating an anti-senior voting record. (Dec 2003)

Mostly a mirror image of Pelosi's. If anything, he is more to the right than she is to the left, judging by this.

That may be a fair point, though my question was more to the point of his effectiveness, not ideology. However, as it relates to his ideology, I feel fairly safe in saying that Denny Hastert is closer to the average American than Nancy Pelosi. Conservatives running for President are generally happy to identify themselves as such. You never heard John Kerry claiming to be a liberal.

I disagree.

I'm not familiar with how the group scores each reps views, but wouldn't 50% be average?

Yeah, but if I like the groups, that makes them moderate, right?

Maybe we should have voting tests to make sure people are competent enough to vote?

I didn't say I favored restricting the franchise. I said I hope that people who don't bother to educate themselves about the issues stay home. Is it your position that you want people who don't know Dick Cheney from Dick Clark voting?

"Lol, I guess it depends on your perspective, don't you think? If you believe that you're in the smarter group then I don't see the insult."

MB I personally don't see the humor in talking down to people, clearly you and -5- are on the same page.

Have a nice evening "gentlemen"...

When more people vote for the next American Idol than the next American President, I think its too late to worry about this.

I'm sorry. I was being ironic. You take things very personally. (That's not a bad thing.) I'm not trying to butt heads.

I don't agree with everything in that essay. I thought it was an interesting perspective, with a few good points. Not anything I would describe as "Anti-American."

You already know I think there is a valid comparison to be made between Iraq and Vietnam. The author predicts mutiny in Iraq next year; maybe he's right: several hundred are already leading a revolt

The bottom line on Nancy is that she will be an effective Speaker. At least she will be an improvement over hastert. Based on his actions on the Foley affair, we know he's a goddam liar.

I agree 100% that Pelosi will be an effective Speaker and an improvement over Hastert. In my opinion, at worst, Hastert is a liar who covered up for a pedophile, and at best, a Speaker who had no idea what was going on on his watch.

I think that an article that calls our military's officers cowards and traitors, while they are engaged in conflict, is as anti-American as it gets. I'll let the reader decide; you and I can agree to disagree.

Actually, the article you link to includes 125. Out of, what, 140,000? 0.1% - some revolt.

Do you really think Hastert has told the truth about what he knew and when he knew it concerning Foley? If you truly believe him, I've got a bridge about a mile from my office I would like to sell you.

You really need to take off your rose colored glasses and recognize a cover-up when you see it.

That article specifies 125 active duty have signed, out of 346 service members total. You're right it's is not much compared to 140,000; but it's a start.

Hastert will certainly lose the Speaker position, even if the GOP was to retain a majority. He even stands a possibility of losing his election period. Latest poll has him ahead of his totally obscure opponent 52% to 42% and rumors have it that the gap is narrowing. Last election, Hastert won with 69% of the vote.

I think if Hastert had known the contents of the messages that he was forced to resign over, he would have been forced to resign sooner. The party didn't care about him - any Republican could win that seat under normal circumstances. The more likely scenario is that operatives in the Democrat party knew about this earlier and held it for an opportune moment.
