DQ, sorry to hear he is not doing better. I know how tough it is not knowing what is going to happen. Hang in there and know I am thinking of you.

Thanks everyone... we are going to see him a little bit later, I hope he is awake.

Mom is ready for the rubber room... she is just wiped out. SHe is coming up for dinner this afternoon, I am trying to get her to stay overnight so she can relax a bit.

Well, update on the poor old bugger:

He had his scheduled surgery on New Year's eve... I met him as the rehab ambulance dropeed him off, he was in a lot of pain.
He is still not clear-headed, which is a concern, he didn't know what day it was or whether or not he had had the surgery already.

Then he had 7 hours of vascular surgery. The MD said that he cleared out most of the veins in his left leg and the circulation was improving. Now, the circulation in his hands is getting worse, although the MD said that the hands are generally less of a problem than the feet.

So, he is currently all morphined out in ICU, I spoke with my Mom yesterday and she said he was being a total crankpot, even with the morphine... they expect to move him to a regular room today sometime if his BP can improve (running about 50/30). After that, he will go back to rehab for major physical therapy.

At least he made it through the surgery.

Happy New Year All!

Thanks for the update and I'm sorry your family is having to go through this. How old is your father, DQ? I have learned with my aunt over the last two years that sometimes older people get confused while they are in the hospital. I think it's called 'sundowners'. Hopefully it will clear up quickly.

Keep us posted.

FYI, from my daughter, the Director of Nursing at a local nursing home....

'Sundowners' refers to the lack of clarity of thinking that often occurs with geriatric patients literally 'as the sun goes down'. They wake up clear headed but, as the day goes on, they tire and their thinking gets muddled.

Hospitalization and the accompanying drugs cause fear and confusion that are common in lots of patients but especially the elderly.

DQ, morphine is a heavy duty drug that can cause all kinds of reactions. As a whole, men tend to make more ornry patients and it sounds like your dad might be one of these. More ((hugs)) headed your way. Share them with your mom, ok?
