Definition of "Unable to Locate" -Returned Check

Answered by:

Question:
Three checks - all the same amount and same serial number - were cashed by our customer and subsequently returned to our bank as unable to locate. The prosecuting attorney is asking for a definition of unable to locate and I am having difficulty locating this information. Please advise how I can respond - without this information the prosecuting attorney doesn't feel he can win the case.
Answer:

by Brian Crow: "Unable to locate" means that the drawee bank does not have an account that matches the information on the check. It is "unable to locate" an account.

Answer:

by Ken Golliher: It's possible that your prosecutor should get off her duff and do her own homework; e.g. call the drawee bank and ask them what they meant. In all probability the checks are fraudulent; the bank has no account in this name or number.
